When the aluminum PowerBook G4s were first released in January 2003, 12-inch and 17-inch models were introduced first, while the 15-inch model retained the titanium body until September 2003, when a new aluminum 15-inch PowerBook was released. Both models were hailed for their modern design, long battery life, and processing power.

The PowerBook G4 is a series of notebook computers manufactured, marketed, and sold by Apple Computer, Inc. Though there's a slim chance of converting the majority of Windows users over, the PowerBook is undoubtedly a fine system that mobile macheads will love.An aluminum PowerBook G4 with a 15.2-inch screen The PowerBook has all the style and performance we have come to expect from Apple's machines. On our DVD Battery Test, the PowerBook took 2 hours 20 minutes, versus the C610's 2 hours 58 minutes-still enough to watch most movies all the way through. On Gaussian Blur, a test that Macs usually place first or second on, the PowerBook was slower than both of our Pentium systems, but we surmise that the Photoshop 7.0 version of the Gaussian Blur filter may need some tweaking. The PowerBook performed well on Photoshop tests that take advantage of the Velocity Engine, such as the Sharpen Edges and Despeckle tests, and on "Resize to 200%," which stresses the hard drive as well as the CPU/memory subsystem. And for comparison, we tested the Dell Latitude C610 and the Toshiba Tecra 9100 with 512MB as well. We tested the PowerBook with 512MB of memory. The PowerBook did very well on our cross-platform tests using Photoshop and a DVD battery rundown test.

Since the unit is so thin and the combo drive is fixed, there is no place for a secondary battery. Apple has added only a headphone-/speaker-out jack and decided to leave out any line-in audio jack (meaning you can connect only a speaker or a headset but not a microphone), and it offers only a touch pad as a pointing device. The speakers on the PowerBook sound a little tinny compared with such systems as the Compaq Evo N600c, which provides better JBL speakers.
